MTN Stands with Flood-Affected Communities — R400,000 in Relief, 24/7 Network Support as Recovery Continues

As communities in Limpopo and Mpumalanga continue to recover from severe flooding, the MTN South Africa Foundation has committed R400,000 in immediate relief and deployed technical teams to maintain reliable network connectivity across affected areas.

While rainfall intensity has eased in parts of the region, humanitarian needs remain significant and many households face ongoing disruption. Through a partnership with Gift of the Givers, the MTN Foundation’s R400,000 allocation will fund food parcels, hygiene packs, blankets and school stationery for families in Mbawula Village (Mopani District), Maphophe and Nkhotswi Villages (Vhembe District), Majeje Village (Phalaborwa) and households across Mbombela and Nkomazi. MTN teams will join Gift of the Givers next week for the handover of relief goods to ensure assistance is delivered with care and dignity.

Concurrently, MTN’s network engineers and field crews have been working around the clock to keep communities connected. Despite significant infrastructure damage and operational constraints, network performance was maintained at 97% at the peak of the crisis. Teams have provided backup power to critical sites, deployed generators where required, and prioritized rapid repairs to damaged infrastructure. Working closely with emergency services, interventions have been coordinated to ensure safety and focus on the most urgent needs. MTN’s war rooms remain active 24/7 to monitor network performance and coordinate real-time responses as conditions evolve.

“As communities in Limpopo and Mpumalanga begin the difficult journey from immediate response to recovery, our thoughts remain with every family affected by the floods,” said Moroke Mokhesi, MTN SA General Manager for the Northern Region. “South Africa is our home, and at MTN we recognise our responsibility to act in moments like these. Through our partnership with Gift of the Givers, and through the dedication of our network teams working on the ground, we are providing practical support while ensuring people remain connected. Everyone deserves access to communication, especially during times of disruption, and we are committed to keeping communities connected as they rebuild their lives.”

MTN’s response underscores a dual commitment: providing humanitarian assistance through the MTN South Africa Foundation and sustaining resilient digital infrastructure through operational teams. This effort is part of MTN’s Y’ello Hope portfolio, which delivers practical, immediate support during crises and helps restore stability as communities transition to recovery. Working with trusted partners like Gift of the Givers, MTN aims to ensure assistance is delivered effectively, respectfully and with people at the centre of every intervention.
