Jordaan rallies Bafana ahead of World Cup opener against Mexico

As Bafana Bafana prepare to take on Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan has urged the national team to remain focused and believe in their abilities.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated clash at the iconic Azteca Stadium, Jordaan acknowledged the intimidating atmosphere awaiting the South Africans but expressed confidence in the team’s experience and resilience.

“We want to see commitment, passion, and dedication. They must just focus. Remember that you are equal to anybody in the world. We can deliver a result today,” said Jordaan.

The SAFA president compared the occasion to the memorable 2010 FIFA World Cup opener when South Africa and Mexico played to a 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Jordaan said the Mexican public has warmly embraced Bafana Bafana during their stay, particularly after the team shared a special moment with a young Mexican supporter in Pachuca, generating goodwill among local fans.

He also praised the team’s journey to the World Cup, highlighting their determination during the qualification campaign despite having three points deducted.

“I hope that we will see the kind of Bafana Bafana we saw during the run for qualification. We are here and today we’ll see a continuation of that energy, focus and passion,” he said.
Jordaan concluded by wishing the players well as they look to make a positive start to their World Cup campaign and bring glory to South Africa on football’s biggest stage.
