Polokwane-born chef Refiloe Ramphele, affectionately known as “The Ice Man,” is bringing calm confidence, bold flavour, and creative energy to Nyama Battle: The Mother City, where he is showcasing his passion for approachable food with memorable twists.
Although Refiloe always enjoyed cooking from a young age, his professional culinary journey began in 2019 after an opportunity to work alongside a local chef introduced him to the fast-paced world of professional kitchens.
Over time, Refiloe developed a cooking style inspired by both global flavours and South African street food culture, focusing on dishes that feel familiar and accessible while still delivering excitement and originality.
“Simplicity can elevate any dish,” says Refiloe.
Known for his calm personality and composed approach in the kitchen, Refiloe believes great food does not need to be overly complicated to leave a lasting impression. Entering Nyama Battle is giving Refiloe the opportunity to test his skills in a high-pressure environment while competing alongside talented chefs from across the country. Refiloe says the competition is pushing him to think quickly, trust his instincts, and continue stepping outside of his comfort zone.
With ambitions of expanding his hospitality business beyond Limpopo and eventually creating his own food television show, Refiloe sees Nyama Battle as an important stepping stone towards bigger opportunities. Through his journey, he hopes to inspire others to take risks, embrace new opportunities, and believe that growth often begins outside of your comfort zone.
“Every contestant on Nyama Battle represents more than just their cooking skills. They represent their communities, cultures, kasi roots, and personal journeys,” says Boxer Brand Manager Nontando Sokhela. “At Boxer, we are passionate about uplifting local communities and supporting the people within them. Seeing contestants share their stories and heritage through food reminds us just how much talent exists across South Africa.”
Nyama Battle: The Mother City brings together talented cooks and entrepreneurs from across South Africa, celebrating the people, flavours, and communities behind the country’s street food culture.
Nyama Battle: The Mother City airs every Sunday at 17:00 on e.tv, with repeat broadcasts on eExtra on Saturdays at 19:40 and eReality on Sundays at 16:10. Episodes are also available on eVOD from Mondays.
