Bafana Bafana Exit AFCON After Last-16 Defeat to Cameroon

Bafana Bafana’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign came to an end following a 2–1 defeat to Cameroon in their Last-16 clash at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday. Cameroon took the lead through defender Junior Tchamadeu in the 34th minute before Christian Kofane doubled the advantage just two minutes into the second half. South Africa mounted a late fightback when Evidence Makgopa pulled one back two minutes before regulation time, but it proved insufficient to force extra time.

Despite the loss, Bafana Bafana created several scoring opportunities during the match and were unlucky not to convert their chances, particularly in the first half. Head coach Hugo Broos expressed his disappointment following the elimination. “We are very disappointed and sad that we have been eliminated. I think we had the right plan and everybody saw that, especially in the first half. We had three good chances in the first half, and the game could have been over then,” said Broos. Bafana Bafana will return to their base in Marrakech on Monday, 5 January 2026, before travelling back to South Africa.
