CAF Champions League will afford Sundowns an opportunity to amends their domestic league failures

After a fruitless 2025/26 domestic season which brought no silverware in their trophy cabinet, Mamelodi Sundowns have one last chance to make some amendments by winning CAF Champions League when they take on AS Far in a returned leg billed for Rabat, in Morocco.

The Brazilians have set one leg towards the title’s wall after winning the first leg a week ago at their Loftus Stadium venue, and thanks Aubrey Modiba who converted while denying the Moroccan side an away goal.

Ironically, the Miquel Cardoso coached side were outstanding throughout the season, losing only two league games, but only to lose their league title to Orlando Pirates who lifted the title after they finished on 69 points as opposed to Sundowns’ 68 points. The Brazilians went on to fail dismally on the other domestic cup finals such as the MTN8, the Carling Knockout Cup and the Nedbank Cup.

Despite all those setbacks, the Chlorokop based side are fully aware that this second leg away in Morocco is the only reason that can bring back smiles and hope for the future on the club, moreover the CAF Champions League is the biggest tournament on the continent that comes with some huge incentives in terms of cash plus a position in the World Club competition that also boast of financial windfall.

Victory againt AS Far will see Masandawa achieve their second star engraved on their jersey after having won the competition in 2016 while they were still coached by Pitso Mosimane.

For Sundowns goalkeeper-cum captain, Ronwen Williams, the second leg of this competition which will be televised in more than 100 countries is more than just the game.

“I think we’ve learned valuable lessons along the way, on our path, on our journey,” said Williams.
“Lessons that hurt, you know, in the moment. I can remember how tough it was for us to overcome that heartache and pain.
“And I think this season that we’ve learned, we know how to grind out results.
“We know how important it is not to concede at home.
“So I think this season and this final, we’re going there with a clear understanding of what we need to do to win this tournament.” said Williams who was widely critised after the club lost their league match against TS Galaxy 3-2, the match which they should have won at all cost to retain their Betway Premiership title.
