The Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality has launched an intensive road repair programme to address potholes and damaged streets in the central business district, following weeks of heavy rainfall.
Municipal spokesperson Neville Ndlala said the municipality will also begin re-gravelling damaged roads in surrounding villages as part of the intervention.
In the coming months, a major road rehabilitation project is expected to focus on severely affected roads and washed-away bridges in Tzaneen, Letsitele, Nkowankowa and Haenertsburg.
Ndlala added that the total cost of repairing and rehabilitating the damaged road infrastructure is estimated to exceed R100 million. The municipality has submitted the cost estimates to provincial and national government for assistance, while using its limited maintenance budget to commence urgent repairs in the interim.
