Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality has officially commenced its Executive Committee (EXCO) Lekgotla at Euphoria Golf Estate, marking an important step in strengthening strategic planning ahead of the municipality’s final financial year in office.
The Speaker of Council, Joyce Nkoabela who served as the Programme Director, welcomed delegates and commended both municipal officials and political leadership for their continued efforts to deliver services under challenging conditions.
In her keynote address, Mayor Dr Meriam Molala called for unity and collective action in addressing service delivery challenges.
“We need to join hands to serve our people. We are responsible for providing solutions to service delivery backlogs, unemployment and poverty in our communities. Our people will judge our term as a collective based on the results we deliver,” said Molala.
She emphasised that the success of the 2021–2026 Council will be measured by tangible outcomes rather than political rhetoric.
“Our performance will be evaluated against service delivery targets, the number of jobs created and the number of new households provided with basic services. This is why we exist as a municipality and where our focus must be,” she added.
Molala noted that the focus should be on implementing commitments already contained in the Five-Year Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget.
Key priority areas include:
- Ensuring equitable infrastructure development across all wards and traditional authority areas.
- Decentralisation of services through Thusong Centres, Maintenance Cost Centres and Maintenance Teams.
- Accelerated development of Lebowakgomo, the District Growth Point, and Magatle, a designated Municipal Growth Point in line with the Spatial Development Framework.
- Programmes aimed at increasing the municipality’s revenue base through urban development along the Lebowakgomo–Magatle–Mehlareng corridor.
She further highlighted the importance of inclusive planning, confirming that all wards must be covered in municipal programmes and resolutions. She noted that a development concept for Lebowakgomo is already in place and implementation has begun.
In closing, the Mayor underscored the critical role of operations and maintenance in sustaining service delivery and confirmed progress towards the municipality’s efforts to obtain an electricity distribution license, which will contribute to long-term financial sustainability.
