Mamelodi Sundowns are a step away from clinching their second CAF Champions League title after beating AS FAR 1-0 in a sold-out first-leg final clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday evening.
The match was briefly marred by crowd trouble after some AS FAR supporters allegedly vented their frustrations towards Sundowns fans, forcing security personnel to intervene and restore order.
The Brazilians, who lifted the continental crown a decade ago under the guidance of Pitso Mosimane, are now within touching distance of adding a second star to their badge.
In their triumphant 2016 campaign, Sundowns defeated Zamalek SC 3-1 on aggregate in the final. They won the first leg 3-0 in Pretoria before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat in Egypt.
Back to Sunday’s encounter, Sundowns secured victory courtesy of a stunning long-range free-kick from Aubrey Modiba in the 37th minute.
The Chloorkop-based outfit will head into the decisive second leg in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday, May 24, full of confidence and determined to seal another historic continental triumph
However, AS FAR’s hopes of securing their second African title remain alive, especially with the backing of their passionate home supporters in Rabat.
The Moroccan giants last won the competition 41 years ago, in 1985, after defeating AS Bilima 5-2 in Rabat before playing to a 1-1 draw in Lubumbashi in the return leg.
