MEC Violet Mathye hands over 150 bicycles to Giyani schools

The Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, has successfully concluded a visit to three schools in Giyani, where 150 bicycles were handed over to learners as part of the provincial government’s Service Delivery Week.
The bicycles were distributed through the Shova Kalula Project, an initiative aimed at improving access to education for learners who travel long distances to school.

Distribution Breakdown:
Hanyani Thomo High School (Ka Thomo Block 7): 70 bicycles
Nwakhada Secondary School (Ka-Kheyi): 10 bicycles
Nghonyama High School (Mageva Village, Dzumeri): 70 bicycles
MEC Mathye was accompanied by officials from the Department of Education in the Mopani District, local traditional leaders, Acting Head of Department for Transport and Community Safety, Oupa Nkanyane, and Speaker of the Mopani District Municipality, Cllr Martha Maswanganyi.
Addressing learners during the handover, Mathye highlighted the purpose of the programme, noting that government provides scholar transport for learners who travel more than 5 kilometres, while those travelling shorter distances often do not qualify.
“For those learners, the Shova Kalula programme serves as a vital intervention to reduce fatigue and improve access to education,” she said.
She encouraged learners to use the bicycles responsibly and strictly for school purposes, while also urging them to stay disciplined and avoid criminal activities.
The Shova Kalula Project continues to play a key role in rural communities by reducing long walking distances, improving punctuality, enhancing learner safety, and contributing to better academic performance.
