Stellenbosch FC will head into their Betway Premiership away encounter against Sekhukhune United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium tonight (Wednesday, January 20) highly motivated following the acquisition of three high-profile players.
The Cape Winelands outfit have strengthened their squad with the signings of Tshegofatso Mabasa, Kabelo Kodisang and Mosa Lebusa as they look to revive their league campaign.
Mabasa (29) and Kodisang (26) have both joined the Maroons on short-term loan deals from Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively, while veteran defender Lebusa (33) has signed as a free agent after recently parting ways with Sundowns.
Stellenbosch FC chief executive officer Rob Benadie expressed his delight at securing the trio, saying the signings underline the club’s intent to improve their fortunes for the remainder of the season.
“Our club and the new head coach are extremely pleased to bring in players of the calibre of Mabasa, Kodisang and Lebusa, who we believe can play a significant role in helping us achieve our remaining targets for this season,” said Benadie.
“These signings have arrived on short-term deals but represent a clear statement of our intent to improve this season. We are confident they possess the quality to make an immediate impact.
“They are players of international standard, having all represented South Africa, and they bring a winning mentality and a strong understanding of what it takes to compete at the highest level. That can only benefit our squad as we continue to raise our standards both domestically and on the continent.”
Mabasa, a prolific striker, joins Stellenbosch with more than 70 career goals for club and country and is the reigning Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot winner for the 2023–24 season. He will wear the No. 37 jersey.
Kodisang arrives following a loan spell with Portuguese top-flight side AVS and has previously featured for European clubs such as SC Braga and Moreirense. The winger will don the No. 28 shirt.
Defender Lebusa, who will wear No. 31, brings vast experience and silverware to the squad, having won seven league titles, the Nedbank Cup, MTN8, Carling Knockout, and the CAF African Football League.
All three players have already begun training with the club and could be in line to make their respective debuts in Wednesday night’s clash.
Stellenbosch’s participation in the CAF Confederation Cup has taken a toll on their domestic form, and following the recent departure of head coach Steve Barker, the club finds itself in a difficult position on the league table. The Maroons are currently 14th, with 12 points from 14 matches.
They face a stern test against an in-form Sekhukhune United side, who are third on the log with 25 points from 13 matches.
Kick-off at the Peter Mokaba Stadium is scheduled for 7:30pm.
