New South African Indoor Tug-of-War Team officially capped after more than a decade

The South African Tug-of-War Federation’s Indoor Tug-of-War Team — known as the President’s Team — was officially capped on Saturday, 21 February 2026, during a ceremony held in Cape Town.
The historic occasion marks the formal return of South Africa’s indoor tug-of-war code to the national sporting stage after more than a decade. The capping ceremony recognised the selected pullers while also honouring the coaches, partners, churches, and communities whose dedication helped rebuild the indoor format of the sport.

A Milestone for the Federation

Addressing attendees, Federation President Luther Anton Botha described the ceremony as a defining moment in restoring indoor tug-of-war in the country.
“This is how our national team should truly represent South Africa, the rainbow nation; from every race, culture, and background. All together with one goal — to represent our country and to excel on the world stage,” he said.
His remarks reflected the diversity of the newly selected squad and the broader vision of unity through sport.

Community Roots and Church Support

Several athletes in the national squad began their journey in a tug-of-war team established by the New Heaven New Earth Church of Jesus. Their progression to national level highlights the vital role that community and faith-based structures continue to play in nurturing sporting talent.
Twenty-four-year-old puller Yolanda Tsele shared her excitement and sense of responsibility:
“It’s a big responsibility to represent the country and carry the nation. Fortunately, we have the support of our country. I’m excited to not only see South Africa on the international stage, but also bring back other types of sports forms that have perhaps died or disappeared into the background of bigger, global sports.”
Her words captured both national pride and a passion for reviving lesser-known sporting codes.

A Family’s Pride

For proud mother Fundiswa Tsele, the ceremony was deeply emotional.
“I’m very happy. I know she’s going places. She had to divide herself between school, church, and practice, but she managed to put that together and make it work. I’m very proud.”
Her sentiments echoed the sacrifices and discipline required to compete at national level.

Government Backing

Stellenbosch Municipality’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Sport, Youth and Culture, Councillor Ndiphiwe Olayi, congratulated the team and reaffirmed government’s commitment to both grassroots development and elite sport.
“South Africa is behind you. The flag is behind you. And never forget, we have a whole generation looking forward and looking up to this national team. So good luck, we know you will bring back the gold.”
With renewed institutional backing, community involvement, and a diverse squad ready to compete, the President’s Team now carries the hopes of a nation eager to see South Africa reclaim its place on the international indoor tug-of-war stage.
