Mamelodi Sundowns have reignited the Betway Premiership title race after closing the gap on log leaders Orlando Pirates to just three points, with a game in hand, following an entertaining clash at the FNB Stadium.
The Brazilians took control in the first half, thanks to a sensational performance by Colombian striker Brayan León.
The forward continued his red-hot form, scoring twice in quick succession in the 37th and 41st minutes to give Sundowns a commanding 2–0 lead at halftime.
León has been in scintillating form since joining the club, recently netting a brace in the CAF Champions League to help Sundowns reach the quarterfinals.
Pirates responded immediately after the break, with Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi pulling one back just a minute into the second half to ignite the home crowd and keep the contest alive.
However, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso steadied his side by introducing Marcelo Allende, Themba Zwane and Divine Lunga, helping the visitors control the tempo and see out the result.
Sundowns moved to 35 points from 16 matches, just behind Pirates on 38 points from 17 games, putting pressure on the Buccaneers to maintain their lead.
